Person silencing phone notifications to reduce digital distraction and stay present

The Anatomy of an Everyday Distraction

I often think back and laugh about a time in college when my wife and I were newlyweds around 2005. While she was diligently studying for a test, I must have found myself bored and started making an annoying sort of high-pitched "mmmmm...meh!" sound every few seconds just to get a reaction. The reason I was doing this was partly because, despite her knowing, I was filming it with Who knows what the device was at the time? (It was 2005 so maybe a basic feature phone, video camera, or Palm Pilot rather than today’s smartphone that can do everything those devices could do combined and infinite times more). Naturally, she gave me an urgent, exasperated plea to stop so she could concentrate. Fast-forward to a recent evening when we hosted a large group of youth from church for some short messages and Italian sodas. While most were enjoying great conversations, one friend decided to get some attention by poking others in the back with a plastic sword, repeatedly derailing an otherwise engaging social experience. These are harmless, everyday examples of how we interrupt one another. But on a much more subtle level, how often are our smartphones doing the exact same thing?

Over 200 in a day!?

According to a 2023 study by Common Sense Media, participating teenagers received a median of 237 notifications—with maximums exceeding 4,500—on any given day. Out of those, they actively engaged with a median of 46 notifications. But here is the real kicker: whether a teenager actually unlocked their phone to read a message or simply endured the buzz or chime sitting next to them, that sound acted as an immediate disruption. This constant barrage of alerts creates a staggering amount of digital distraction—true "digital seizures"—that rob us of our ability to be fully present. Whether we are trying to converse with friends, focus on homework, prepare for an exam, or enjoy a quiet family dinner, our attention is constantly being fractured.

Reclaiming Your Focus

Take inventory of your phone's notification settings today. Go into your app settings and turn off push notifications for everything except direct human communication (like phone calls and essential messaging apps). Reclaim your focus by deciding when you want to check your phone, rather than letting your phone dictate when it demands your attention.
