Is Screen Time Silently Squashing Your Child's Natural Drive for Mastery?

The Steep Hill and the Drive for Mastery

A few days ago, I had a hard time getting my 6-year-old son to leave the park so that we could go back home. The reason why: he was trying to overcome challenges and limitations he was experiencing. He’s an athletic little guy who is always trying to keep up with his older siblings. However, despite his best efforts, due to his height, he wasn’t able to reach the lower branches on his own and climb up the trees like his siblings.

After finally persuading him that it was time to go, we got on our bikes to head back home. Then we ran into another obstacle stemming from his determination to gain a new skill or accomplishment. One of the ways to get to the road back to our house is to go up a steep grass hill. With a running headstart, he wanted to try to ride his bike all the way up the hill without stopping. I told him that would be just fine, but that if he didn’t make it, he would only have one more chance to try since we needed to head back home. He agreed and unfortunately didn’t make it on his first try. So, as agreed upon, I let him try for a second time. Unfortunately, he still didn’t make it.

Now, here we were, facing another challenge of leaving the park because he was so determined to conquer that hill—or in other words, master that skill. It was frustrating to have to convince him once more to head back home, but it was also a great thing because he has an important drive for skill mastery.

Reclaiming Real-World Capabilities for Your Family

Skill mastery is one of the driving forces of human nature. It’s ingrained within all of us, but it can also be squashed if we allow other things to distract us from it. As a parent of six children, my wife and I feel the weight of teaching our kids the skills they will need to be successful as they age and eventually move out on their own. Our goal is for them to feel equipped with the tools and experiences that will help them do just that—to become confident in their own capabilities to function independently. We want them to feel like they can contribute to the success and health of our family as a whole, realizing the important role they play and what their strengths bring to those around them.

To do this, your duty as an adult, parent, leader, or caregiver is to make sure that your children and adolescents are developing crucial life skills. Real-life skills represent the essential capabilities and confidence that are lost or stolen when virtual spaces take over real-world growth.

They’re naturally picking up on certain skills in today’s digital world. But being skilled at video games or navigating social media in the virtual world doesn’t translate to much in the real everyday world. As parents, it’s our responsibility to nourish their desire for skill mastery in all key aspects of life—because one day, they’ll need to be equipped to overcome obstacles on their own that they currently aren’t able to conquer.

Don’t feel overwhelmed. I can guarantee you that you have successfully helped your children master, or begin to master, some very important life skills. However, I can also guarantee that there are important areas where life-skills development is still lacking and needs to be acknowledged right away.  Here are some of the key life areas where skills can be built and reclaimed for your family: Social, Environmental, Intellectual, Spiritual, Financial, Physical, and Emotional.

Make notes of one specific real-world skill area where your child may be lacking or overly reliant on digital entertainment. Identify one practical task or physical challenge they can practice mastering this week to build confidence and self-worth.

Sit down with your child for 10 minutes to discuss a new skill or challenge they would love to conquer this month—whether riding up a steep hill, preparing a family meal, or fixing something around the house—and make a plan to support them.
